5 reasons you should meet up sooner rather than later

My husband and I chatted online for a couple of weeks and when I realised I kind of liked him, I suggested we meet up for lunch. We did, and the rest, as they say, is history. I know that for some people, two weeks may be a bit soon to meet up with someone you’re chatting with online, but here are five reasons why I think it’s better to meet up sooner rather than later.

1. It saves time.

If you’re reading this, you’re most likely single and searching, so even though you may have all the time in the world and not be in a hurry to meet someone, everyone wants to know whether a particular love interest is going to lead to something substantial or not. So, the sooner you meet someone, the sooner you can get to know them and decide whether it is a relationship you want to pursue further or one that’s just not for you. It saves everyone time and potential heartbreak.

2. You get to find out if there is really an attraction.

We all have an online persona, and it is easy to fall for someone’s online persona, which may be quite different from the real person. Some people are more confident behind the computer than they are in person. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but the danger is that if you spend ages chatting to someone online, or even on video calls, the person you’re attracted to may be very different from the person you meet face to face. The last thing you want is to have invested time communicating with someone only to meet them and realise there’s no chemistry.

3. You can observe them in the flesh.

This may seem like an obvious one but there are certain things you just can’t find out about someone unless you meet them face to face. Apart from their physical attributes, meeting someone in the flesh allows you to observe some habits, what they’re like in different scenarios, be it in a restaurant, or even just walking down the street, and how they interact with people. You can decide what you like about them and whether to carry on if there are things you don’t like.

4. You get to be yourself, sooner.

When you’re on the dating scene, you’re on your best behaviour, whether you realise it or not. This is especially so when you’re behind a screen, or on the other end of a phone line. Of course, you’re not trying to be deceptive, but the truth is everyone likes to be liked. The sooner you meet someone, the sooner you can relax, and be your true self. This also means you get to know if someone really likes you for who you are.

5. It gives you a sense of commitment.

Some people chat with several people at the same time when they’re online. Meeting up with one person means that you’re less likely to continue conversations with other people, especially if there is a mutual interest. This allows you to focus your attention on the person, and engage better, rather than having various conversations happening simultaneously, which can be distracting.

Do you agree or disagree? When would you say is a good time to meet up with someone?
